  • Windows (mirror1) (mirror2)
  • macOS

LuKeStorm's Custom Patch [edit]

Fixes startup issues (e.g. long black screen startup), removes "Optimal Settings" and "Run in Safe mode" messages and disables intro, it can be downloaded here.

Skip intro videos [edit]

Use the seta com_introplayed "1" command line argument[4]

Tweaks [edit]

There are 3 ways to insert commands.

Use the in-game console[4]
  1. Enable console in the "Game Options".
  2. Open it with ~ .
  3. Type command and press Enter.

Notes

If commands aren't sticking, try putting "seta" before them.
If you are in the multiplayer part of the game, you need to place a common slash / before the commands.
Use command with +set prefix as command line arguments[4]
Edit directly the .cfg files[4]

Field of view (FOV) [edit]

Change FOV with console command[5]

Use the console command cg_fov XX

Change FOV with hex editor[6]
  • To change FOV for singpleplayer:
    1. Open CoD2SP_s.exe (v1.2 latest) with a hex editor such as HxD.
    2. Go to address 000A11A0 and change A0 42 (which is 80) to B4 42 for cg_fov 90.
  • To change FOV for multiplayer:
    1. Open CoD2MP_s.exe (v1.3 latest) with a hex editor such as HxD.
    2. Goto address 000BDF00 and change A0 42 (which is 80) to B4 42 for cg_fov 90.

Notes

To get a higher value than 90 use this Floating Point Converter.

Windowed [edit]

Enable windowed mode using the console.[7]
  1. Press ~ and the in-game console will appear.
    • If it doesn't appear go to Game Options and make sure the console is enabled.
  2. In console, type in /r_fullscreen 0 to enable windowed mode (or /r_fullscreen 1 to enable fullscreen mode) and press Enter.
  3. Type in /vid_restart and press Enter to restart the game's renderer and apply new settings.
This only applies to the single-player component of the game. For multiplayer component of the game, use the CoD2MPWindowed.

Frame rate (FPS) [edit]

Remove 91 FPS cap in multiplayer.

Look for seta com_maxfps 85 in your config_mp.cfg file and set 85 to 0.

Issues fixed [edit]

TweakGuides has created a comprehensive guide for fixing issues in this game.

Possible fixes for general crashing [edit]

Crashes when launching the game (possible fixes) [citation needed]
  • Turn Steam overlay off in properties.
  • Turn off any program that overlays a GUI in the game (teamspeak GUI overlay) etc.
  • Turn on stereo mix under recording tab in sound properties.
  • Plug in a microphone.

[edit]

The fix is to force the CoD2 exe file to only use one processor core, but that doesn't mean the problem is exclusive to multicore processors; the same thing happens even on a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading. Note that opening the Task Manager after starting the game and setting the process CPU affinity from there does not work. We have to get a little more involved than that. One last thing: the following directions are for the singleplayer exe file. If you find you need to apply this fix to multiplayer as well simply repeat the steps for CoD2MP_s.exe.

FMV freezing [citation needed]
  1. Download imagecfg and extract it into the installation folder.
  2. Make a backup copy of your CoD2SP_s.exe since we are going to be altering it.
  3. Open a cmd window and move to the installation folder.
  4. Enter this command: imagecfg -u CoD2SP_s.exe.
  5. If it worked you should see a little report saying the affinity has been set to a single processor. The -u switch makes the application only run in uni-processor mode.

Getting automatically kicked from servers [edit]

Kicked from servers [citation needed]
  1. Turn Steam overlay off in properties.
  2. Update PunkBuster manually.

Game won't start on Windows Vista and higher [edit]

On some systems the game won't start on Windows Vista, 7 or higher.

Enable compatibility settings [citation needed]
  1. Go to <path-to-game> .
  2. Enable the following compatibility settings for the CoD2SP_s.exe and CoD2MP_s.exe files: Compatibility mode (Windows XP (Service Pack 3)).
  3. Run the game (CoD2SP_s.exe for Singleplayer, CoD2MP_s.exe for Multiplayer).

Notes:
Compatibility can be also enabled using a batch file, example:
set __COMPAT_LAYER=WinXP
start "" CoD2MP_s.exe

Low fps when using compatibility settings [edit]

Because running in compatibility-settings gives DirectX some unnecessary flags, in-game-fps can be highly reduced on some systems.

Advanced FPS fix for when running in compatibility mode [citation needed]
  1. Get the Compatibility Toolkit from this Microsoft page and install.
  2. Run the Compatibility Administrator (32-bit).
  3. Select New Database (1) and press Fix.
  4. Fill in the vendor name and the program name, as well as the location of the program. Press next.
  5. Tick Compatibility Mode and choose Windows XP SP3. Press next.
  6. Untick fix DXMaximizedWindowedMode. It will give a warning, press yes to continue.
  7. Select fix DXPrimaryEmulation, click Parameters, enter: -DisableMaxWindowedMode and press OK.
  8. Press Next. After that press Finish.
  9. Press Save, select the database name and save it to a location.
  10. Press File - Install.
  11. Close Compatibility Administrator.
  12. Because it will conflict with what we removed, you should now revert the compatibility fix you did to CoD2SP_s.exe and CoD2MP_s.exe above.

Game crashes when changing any graphics setting [edit]

In the graphics option menu, set the "Rendering Method Preference" to DirectX 9.

If the game crashes when trying to change the renderer, either modify the game's configuration file manually with a text editor or apply compatibility settings (see Game won't start on Windows Vista and 7 for details).

Alternatively, if none of the fixes above worked, and the game still crashes, then go into the compatibility settings for the CoD2SP_s.exe and CoD2MP_s.exe files and check the box that says Disable Fullscreen Optimizations. See how to disable Fullscreen Optimizations for details.

Another workaround is to start a new game and then change graphics settings from there.

"Failed to find Steam" error [edit]

Get the Steam.dll file[8]
  1. Go to <Steam-folder> .
  2. Copy the Steam.dll file and paste it into <path-to-game> .
  3. Run the game.

[edit]

  1. Use "gfx_d3d_x86_s.dll" from this mod
  2. https://www.moddb.com/games/call-of-duty-2/downloads/call-of-duty-2-single-player-improvement

Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
