You swear that you knew your iPhone was turned on but for some reason now the screen seems to be, um, black.
Weird enough, it's hard to explain to others without appearing like a moron who doesn't know a screen is supposed to appear black.
But you're not wrong.There is something fishy about this because it's as if your iPhone appears like it is turned off (when you know it's not) whilst at the same time your iPhone rings and works like it usually does except it's just that the screen is, well, black and doesn't show anything or respond.
You can't answer the calls that you get nor can you reset your iPhone in hopes it might do something to resurrect it. In this quick and simple guide, I'll show you how you can fix when your iPhone screen is black once and for all in less than 3 minutes of your time. 🙂
How to Fix When iPhone Screen is Black: 3 Ways
1. Give Your iPhone the Gift of the Hard Reset.
You'll arrive at a crossroads when you're trying to find out whether if the reason why your iPhone's screen is black is because of its hardware or its software.
When you're at that point and you're deciding which course of action to take, its always best to first make sure your iPhone gets a hard reset which helps to pinpoint where the problem lies.
Now a hard reset is really not that hard to understand. Just think of it as how you normally restart your iPhone but with this it clears more of your device's unwanted garbage memory. (it's NOT your storage. You won't lose any of your data).
So here's how you do it:
If you're on an iPhone 6S or older
Step 1: Go ahead and press and hold your Power button together with your Home button at the same time. Hold it for at least 20 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
If you're on an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus
Step 1: Go ahead and press the Power button and your Volume Down button at the same time. Hold it for at least 20 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
If you're on an iPhone 8, 8 Plus or on iPhone X
Step 1: Quickly press and release your Volume Up button then press and release your Volume Down button.
Step 2: Then, press and hold your Power button (iPhone 8 or 8 Plus) or your Side button (iPhone X). Hold it until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Now if the Apple logo does appear on your screen, then that means there isn't a problem with your iPhone's hardware and it had a software crash. Your iPhone should be fixed by now.
However, if you don't see the Apple logo on your screen then chances are it could probably be a problem with your iPhone's hardware.

2. Getting Under the Hood.
If you've tried a hard reset on your iPhone and you still find the iPhone's screen is black then you're going to need to open your iPhone and look underneath it to find out where the problem lies with its hardware.
BTW, You don't have to do this.
It can be quiet scary opening your iPhone or if you are afraid that you might make a mistake that might break it. Know that, you can always go to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them get it fixed. They may even do it for free if it's just tweaking here and there. But if you don't want that and you feel you can manage it as well as you have the experience then you should be fine going at it alone.
Let's dive right in.
Step 1: The very first thing you should do once you've opened your iPhone, is to check for two special pieces of hardware:
1. your iPhone's display.
2. your iPhone's logic board.
The display is the one that shows you the images that you see. Kinda like a mini television. The logic board is the brains that tells the mini television, which is your display, of what it should show.
Step 2: Let's pay a visit to our iPhone's display first. You should be able to see the entire display of your iPhone clearly and it is removable. But this is where it gets tricky! Even it if is removable, there are some 'stuff' that is built into the iPhone's display. So thread gently!
These 'stuff' include:
1. your iPhone's LCD screen.
2. the iPhone's digitizer.
3. your iPhone's front facing camera.
4. your Home button.
The LCD screen, of course, is the screen that you see images being shown on your iPhone. The digitizer is the part of the display where it recognizes and processes your touches. It's called a digitizer because your touches are converted into a language that the iPhone can understand. (pretty cool huh?) The front facing camera, well, you know what that is. The Home button is the button to go Home (it's extinct).
Step 3: Now that you've been introduced to those new four components of your iPhone's display , it's time to pay a little visit to your iPhone's logic board. Each of the components that you saw just now (the LCD screen, digitizer, front facing camera, home button) has its own separate connector that connects it with your iPhone's logic board.
Which is the reason why, you were able swipe across your iPhone's screen with your finger, even if the screen is black. This is because the digitizer is working but the LCD is not.
Step 4: Finally, we find the problem: your iPhone's screen is black because the connector (that we just talked about in the previous step) that connects your LCD component of your iPhone's display to its brains which is the logic board is dislodged.
Step 5: To fix the problem, all you have to do is just plug the dislodged cable (what the geeks like to call it: the display data connector) back in.
That's it! You can close your iPhone's hood and try out if that has fixed the iPhone's screen.
If you find that has not worked either to fix your iPhone from showing a black screen then …
3. It Can Be That Your Display Is Broken.
Even if you've broke open your iPhone and tried plugging the dislodged cable back in place, it can be that the LCD itself is damaged and needs to be be replaced.
But then you might be asking..
How do I know whether my iPhone's display is dislodged or broken?
The frequent patterns based on countless experience of several Apple technical experts working with iPhones is:
• If you're iPhone's display stopped working after you dropped it, then your iPhone's screen is black because the LCD cable (display data connected) became dislodged from the logic board.
• If you're iPhone's display stopped working after it got wet, then your iPhone's screen is black because the LCD is broken due to water damage and needs to be replaced.
Here's what you can do if you find your iPhone's LCD is broken and needs getting fixed:
1. Bring your iPhone to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider and have it fixed. They can repair it but it can also be very expensive.
2. You can try purchasing a new LCD for your iPhone and fix it yourself. This is not recommended as it is too easy to break something which can end up with your iPhone unusable forever.
